The world of seasonal tyres can be very confusing for the average motorist. Part of the problem is that manufacturers are generally designing the tyres on the continent, and they have different laws relating to cars than we do. In the UK, most cars on the road are fitted with ‘summer tyres’ all year. The main reason for this is that in other European countries, it is a legal requirement to change to winter, or cold weather tyres, for the winter season. Of course, over here we don’t usually have such extreme cold, and our summer tyres are therefore adequate all year round.
However, when the temperature falls lower than 7°C, winter tyres will deliver improved performance and grip. They are much more likely to get you to your destination and safely home again with their better grip and traction control in colder weather. Winter tyres are the one type of seasonal tyre that is easy to understand! Even in the United Kingdom, the average temperature for most parts of the country will be low enough to warrant changing to winter tyres. The most obvious benefit of changing would be to keep you on the road in the winter season no matter what the weather – no need to phone work to say you can’t get off your drive. As a nation, we do seem to be opening our minds to winter tyres, and realising that they are a good investment. And they shouldn’t really cost much more as each one will spend around half the year in storage rather than getting worn down on the roads, so the only extra costs that you may need to pay for is storage and fitting. By now you should understand that winter tyres are for winter (clearly), and summer tyres are suitable all year (not so clear, but you can trust us!)…but where do all season, or all weather, tyres, fit in? All season tyres are actually a compromise between winter and summer tyres. As with most compromises, they don’t match up to the performance of either summer or winter tyres. It is best to think of them as a hybrid and they are mainly just available on the continent. There are a few countries where motorists are permitted to have all season tyres fitted on their vehicles all year instead of having to change them twice a year.
What does this mean for the UK driver? Well, all season tyres are not recommended over here. If you only want to choose one type of car tyre you are better off sticking to summer tyres. And in fact, they aren’t readily available over here, so aren’t a choice you are likely to see often. We do recommend changing to winter tyres when the temperature starts falling.
